De Kelders Drip Cave & Other Caves
De Kelders is the Afrikaans word for "the cellars", referring to the many caves in the sandstone cliffs in the area. Of these, the most visited is Klipgat Cave, where some of the oldest remains of modern man (homo sapiens) have been found. De Kelders Drip Cave is the only freshwater cave found along the coast of Africa, and you can enter the cave and even swim in the natural mineral water, but must be accompanied by a guide. (Contact Gansbaai tourism centre: 028 384 8336). It was first visited by Lady Anne Barnard in 1798.
Walker Bay Nature Reserve and "Die Plaat"
Where De Kelders ends, the Walker Bay Nature Reserve begins. It is a coastal reserve (managed by Cape Nature) that stretches all the way to the Klein River estuary near Hermanus. The reserve boasts a beautiful long beach, known as “Die Plaat”, with white sands and limestone rocks. The Walker Bay Nature Reserve is popular for one day hikes, angling, swimming, surfing and picnicking.
Walkerbaai Natuurreservaat en "Die "Plaat"
Waar De Kelders eindig, begin Walker Bay Natuurreservaat.

Hiking Trails near De Kelders, Hermanus, Gansbaai, Uilkraalsmond and Franskraal
- Hermanus 18 km - This day hike from De Kelders Cave to Hermanus via Die Plaat will take you past some beautiful coastal scenery.
- Duiwelsgat/ Klipgat Trail - This is a 7 km trail from the harbour of Gansbaai along the shore to the entrance of the Walker Bay Nature Reserve and the famous Klipgat Cave. The trail passes several larger and smaller caves and coves. Along the way you stumble upon a natural hole in the ground, surrounded by a circular stonewall, the locals call “Duiwelsgat” (The hole of the Devil). The wall was build by the first inhabitancy of the area to prevent the sheep and cattle from falling into the hole, which was formed by the collapse of the cave ceiling.
- Various coastal walks, e.g. to Uilkraalsmond Nature Reserve, Pearly Beach, Kleinbaai, Franskraal and Walker Bay.
- Platbos - A protected cove in the middle of De Kelders is perfect for swimming and picnics. Fig trees, some thought to be around 150 years old, grow near the freshwater streams. The Platbos hiking trail runs along Africa's southernmost forest - an ancient, indigenous forest on the slopes of the Baviaanspoort Hills on the Grootbos Road just outside Stanford.
Staproetes naby De Kelders, Hermanus, Gansbaai, Uilkraalsmond and Franskraal
Vyebome, waarvan sommige selfs so oud as 150 jaar kan wees, groei naby varswaterstrome. Dit is Afrika se mees suidelike woudgebied.
